Telecentre Women program wins GEM-Tech Award for bridging ICT gender gap

The Telecentre Women (TCW) Program – a global, multi-stakeholder initiative of Telecentre.org Foundation (TCF) geared towards bridging the gender gap in ICT by empowering disadvantaged and underserved community women with ICT access, knowledge and skills and expanding their opportunities for better lives – won the Gender Equality and Mainstreaming – Technology (GEM-Tech) Award under the Closing the ICT Gender Gap category. Winners of GEM-Tech 2014 were announced today, October 28, during the ongoing ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2014 in Busan, South Korea.

Jointly organized by UN Women and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the GEM-Tech Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of organizations and individuals in the area of gender equality and mainstreaming through. The launch of the awards in June this year prompted over 360 nominations from over 70 countries around the world. From the nominations received, 37 finalists were selected. The awards were open to leading women and men, as well as organizations working in the field of ICT and gende

 

B0_xJybCMAA-KZ0-225x300TCW’s successful transformation from a simple Digital Literacy Campaign for Women launched in 2011 into a full-fledged major program of TCF, the engagement and mobilization of a large network of partners in different parts of the world, the attainment of its goal of training 1 million women worldwide and equipping them with the necessary ICT skills, along with the many inspiring stories of women who have been trained and whose lives were changed through ICT – all these contributed to TCW’s win at the GEM-Tech Awards.

As a program, TCW is dedicated to making an even greater impact on the lives of millions of women and girls worldwide through the power of ICTs, building on the digital skills gained and empowering them further by equipping them with entrepreneurial skills as well.

• Efforts to Reduce Threats Online and Building Women’s Confidence and Security in the Use of ICTs àAssociation for Progressive Communications (APC) – Take Back the Tech! (South Africa)
• ICT and Broadband strategies, policies, framework that promote women’s digital empowerment à Federal Ministry of Communication Technology (Nigeria)
